For anyone who thinks video games don’t require thought and are all about button-mashing reflexes, scroll on. A Point & Click is a distinct genre—very cinematic and very approachable. Great for families.
Point & Click is a distinct genre. Adventure and puzzle games that are played with the mouse, or a few buttons on the controller, all without hurry. Games that require calm, brain power and patience but that transport you into real worlds, a bit like a good crime novel. In most cases, you’ll have time on your side.
Ideal if you’re not a sharpshooter or if you want to be carried into a real story at your own pace.
Usually you control a character and you must click on parts of the scenery (the scenery is often gorgeous!), or on other characters to interact with them. It’s about conducting investigations, questioning suspects, combining objects to gather clues. But this type of game isn’t always easy. You often have to search before discovering where objects are, how to use them, solve puzzles, combine information.
Unlike many action games, in a Point & Click the player does not progress by changing how they play. They don't get better by training, they don’t gain bonuses, items, or upgrades to advance the story. Here only your gray matter counts. A cerebral approach that can be sparked up by playing together with others. Personally we love playing it as a family. All gathered around the same screen, real moments of conviviality around a shared story. Especially since younger players won't solve the same puzzles as their parents. It’s fun to see everyone’s logic.
Of course if you want to advance alone in the story, like in a good book, don’t deprive yourself. It will remind you of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books. Plus, there are something for all tastes, serious and tragic investigations, wacky and humorous quests, outrageous dystopias...
Some people describe these games as cartoons or interactive films. This is quite telling because Point & Click games often share a common trait: they are beautiful and gripping!
