FPS, TPS.. What is a shooter game?

Everything starts in December 1993, the 10th to be exact. On that blessed day, a brand-new game released on every computer in the world: Doom.
Its gameplay stood out from all games released before. We play as Doomguy (the Doom guy in French), a space soldier who must stem an invasion of space demons. This game is a revolution. If it shook up the small world of video games at the time, it's thanks to gameplay never seen before. The 'Doom-like' were born, they would later change names to become 'shooting games'.

The gameplay of shooter games can be summarized very simply: you move and aim with the joysticks and the right trigger is to shoot. But what really differentiates a shooter game from another is its 'viewpoint'.

First or third person?

There it is, the major difference of shooter games, everything is a question of perspective. A game termed 'first-person' (FPS) will make you experience the action directly through the eyes of the character you embody, as in Call of Duty. A 'third-person' game, on the other hand, will place you right behind your avatar, as in Fortnite for example. Gameplay differences between the two styles are minimal, it's more a matter of taste.

Why play war?

Excellent question! Because it's fun, well I think. Shooter games are often singled out, they would make young people violent and aggressive, or 'There are more intelligent activities'. For the first argument, evidence shows the contrary; for the second, we must admit that there are more clever activities than shooting at other people, but throughout history, children have played war, whether with toy soldiers or wooden swords. So...

But let's not forget one of the most important aspects to explain the success of shooter games: the possibility of playing together with others and sometimes online. This is what propelled these games to success during the previous console generation. You can enjoy picking apart shooter games, but the unifying aspect of these games is proven. Gotaga, the French streamer who counts the most views on Twitch, even launched his career on Call of Duty.

A few vocabulary terms are in order:

FPS: First Person Shooter. A shooter game from the first-person perspective. You see the game through the eyes of the main character.

TPS: Third Person Shooter. A shooter game from the third-person perspective, the camera is placed behind the game's hero.

Cursor: This little crosshair in the middle of your screen, it's your sight, your aim. It's what you'll look at the most during your matches. If you don't, you'll mostly shoot at the background.

Map: A map. It's your playing field. They are crucial in shooter games; if they are well-designed, no one complains. However, if one happens to be poorly made, forums ignite and players will do everything to avoid it.

The rest of the shooter game's vocabulary is partly made up of firearm names. But given little interest in the art of war, I don't differentiate an assault rifle from a hunting rifle. Some players, however, have knowledge of the subject that would make the most seasoned military personnel blush.
