What is a Dungeon Crawler?

One more term that's not well known in the gaming world, yet it refers to fantastic titles!

To put it simply: The world of a dungeon crawler forces the player to navigate from point A to point B with very little room to maneuver, in contrast to Open World games.

The dungeon crawler, or 'dungeon exploration' in French, is a video game genre that emphasizes exploring complex underground labyrinths, commonly called 'dungeons'. These dungeons, often randomly generated, are filled with monsters, treasures, traps, and puzzles. The main objective is to navigate through these dark and crawling environments, solve puzzles, and defeat enemies to reach a specific objective, such as discovering a legendary treasure or defeating a powerful boss.

First introduced in 1987 with Dungeon Master, the apex of dungeon crawlers was the Diablo series. But not all dungeon crawlers follow this approach. One thing is certain: the dungeons are always designed to be grim, dark, and dangerous, with deadly traps, secret doors, and unpredictable encounters we'd rather avoid.

Combat: Encounters with fantastical creatures and monsters are very common. This is why many dungeon crawlers are also Hack and slash.

Character Progression: Dungeon crawlers often involve a character progression system. Players gain experience by fighting enemies, solving puzzles, and discovering treasures, which allows them to improve their skills and abilities.

Conglomerate 451

A fusion of two genres – Dungeon Crawler and Rogue-like – that results in a polished cyberpunk experience. You are the CEO of a Special Agency, instructed to restore order in sector 451. To achieve your objective, you are authorised to create clones (known as "agents") to eradicate crime and restore order. But stay sharp: you only have 75 weeks to complete your mission.

Blasphemous

This is a masterpiece! But only for adults with nerves of steel! It's a 2D Metroidvania with Dark Souls elements. It's great to look at, very hard, and immerses you in a truly seedy and oppressive atmosphere with a religious backdrop. It's a sinister treat that will leave its scars on those brave enough to venture within. We loved it!
