You have been warned: the story is as dark as they come. You play as a woman who has inherited a vast hotel in the snowy middle of nowhere. If you have seen Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, you’ll be on familiar ground here. In addition to the hotel named after the one where the film was shot, and that unforgettable 70s carpet, the game features a character called Danny and an Overlook room, a weird buzzing of bees and the slow burning terror at the thought of freezing to death or the hotel exploding, just like in Stephen King’s novel. It’s an addictive walking simulator. Top tip: play with headphones to get immersed in the game’s audio and expect plenty of jump scares.

You need a strong stomach to want to play as Ben, a ten year-old boy who has to sneak and hide to avoid three intruders in his home. A woman and two men, one of whom stands out with their face hidden by a deer’s skull. A panic room, stress, unexpected noises…. in Intruders: Hide and Seek, the action takes place in first person. You’ll need to search the house to find the items you need to achieve your objectives. Of course, it doesn’t go according to plan and your visitors will turn the house upside down to find you. This means that you need to hide away in the slightest of shadows to avoid your enemies. Hide and seek has never been bleaker.
