What is a Brawler video game?

Brawler is an English word that defines a fighter, a big brainless brute who will risk taking hits to bash back and hit even harder!

It gave its name to a genre of video games that was very popular in the 80s/90s.

Once known as beat 'em all, these games are distinguished by their frenetic action, featuring characters who face hordes of enemies with bare hands or with melee weapons. It’s brutish but really great for clearing your head.

We are really in close-quarters combat and in linear environments, with left-to-right movement or sometimes up-and-down movement.

Get ready to face large groups of enemies simultaneously—true hordes!

By extension, nowadays, arena-fighting games like Super Smash Bros are also classified as brawler because they are games where characters fight with bare hands or melee weapons.
