True Fear: Forsaken Souls Part 2
The Digital Lounge
Dark and terrifying. Goodbye abandoned house; hello mental asylum. This time, our heroine will be flirting with madness and taking us along with her in a sequel that's even darker than the first. In Part 1, there were hidden objects and puzzles, but here the gameplay takes a much more violent turn. Not one for the faint-hearted!
Part two of True Fear: Forsaken Souls takes you to an abandoned insane asylum. A dangerous place, because while it may be bleak by day, at night it comes alive.
It's best to have played the first game to understand the story.
The game begins with an intro sequence that shows Holly driving along, thinking about the events of the first game: she seems to recall that she is supposed to visit the Dark Falls Asylum, but while she's driving strange things begin to occur, like shadows on the back seat and a flashing interior light.
This sequel is a much longer game than the first, and boasts all of its hallmarks: puzzles, a gloomy atmosphere, jump scares... Be warned that this time you really will be chilled to the bone.
The difficulty has also been raised and some puzzles can be a real challenge. But don't let that put you off, because just like in the first game, you can skip the current puzzle at any time and just focus on the story.
Our advice? Play with headphones for total immersion. You'll hear voices that seem to come from the beyond and worrying sounds, all of which adds to the game's atmosphere.
We liked how you can never really fail in this game. You can try (and retry) the different combos again and again until you hit the right one. There's no time pressure either: you can play at your own pace and use clues and shortcuts whenever you want to. You're here for the dark atmosphere and the plot reminiscent of Rosemary's Baby.
Our favourite part? The figurines. Just like in the first game, there's more than a dozen figurines of the game's characters hidden for you to find throughout the game, and each one reveals a little bit more of past events.
True Fear: Forsaken Souls part 2 immerses you in its oppressive atmosphere thanks to an intelligent story, polished cutscenes, hand-drawn environments, and a hypnotic soundtrack. You can follow clues, solve puzzles, pore over notes and photos, and lose yourself in a terrifying adventure as you uncover the secrets of your past.
It's a great game that's as scary as it is smart.
The cliffhanger ending paves the way for the third instalment, and we can't wait to play it as soon as it is released.
