WRC 7 is a small gem of realism. If you're after the sensations that rally drivers can feel, you've knocked on the right door. In this installment, the driving is demanding, the slightest mistake will send you off the track and earn you a time penalty. We're far from arcade games, such as "Garfield Kart" for example. Here the watchword is realism.
WRC 7 takes you on a journey through 13 countries. Each circuit is unique; you really feel like you're touring the world with your co-driver. The game sounds are of remarkable quality, from the roar of the engine to the screech of tires on the roads, you’d swear you’re there.
As in a real race, your co-driver gives you information about the circuit layout. However, whatever driver you choose, your teammate will always have the same voice, but that’s nitpicking.
The only shadow on the board may be weather conditions management, this point still needs improvements, the snowflakes look straight out of the PS2.
Many game modes are available in WRC 7; in single-player you'll find a career mode where you can challenge the world's most famous drivers. The custom championship mode lets you race on circuits with the tandem and car of your choice. You can modify your “ride” as you like, according to your preferences. For beginners, a “driving test” mode lets you get the hang of it before jumping into the big league. This mode is there so you can get your bearings and not run anyone over in the other game modes. Surprise, you can play two players on the same screen by splitting it into two halves. Something rare in current games.
Be careful with repeated collisions: each contact with the scenery damages your car, it becomes less and less maneuverable with every impact, which adds even more realism to the game.
Your car is fully customizable, from brake balance to the difference in transmission; everything can be tuned before a grand prix. Not having a license and not being a mechanic, I just swapped tires, but I must admit I don't know what soft tires have that hard tires don’t.
Even I, who am not a world-class driver (far from it), had fun with WRC 7, so we invite you to put on your best driver suit, with some stickers found here and there, sensations guaranteed!
