An ode to Mecha battles and those who fight in them. This tactical RPG combines a deep narrative and robot battles, and all in black and white. You play as likeable anti-heroes; the robot animations are amazing, and the voice acting too. With 60% story and 40% combat, every moment is a real treat with an additional splash of humour. A favourite here at Blacknut!
Welcome to Rain City, the place where robot boxers and their rough and ready dreams come together for the Ultimate Golden God World Wide Cup!
You play as Dominic Shade, a pilot with legendary bad luck, ready to fight to escape his meaningless existence. This tactical RPG immerses you in a world where each mecha battle demands strategy and flair, and where each mission – even the most straightforward – may have hidden surprises in store.
We liked the black and white aesthetic. It's bold and really well done, giving the game a unique atmosphere that's part retro and part dystopian.
The combat animations are fun to watch and satisfying to pull off, and every character is more eccentric than the last, with snappy dialogue that contains just the right amount of humour. Dominic and his band of antiheroes form a group that's as likeable as it is unlikely, with each member bringing their own spark of madness to the story. A real treat for both eyes and ears!
Our favourite part? Beyond the robot battles, it's the depth of the characters that really hits the spot. Dominic isn't your traditional hero; he's a survivor surrounded by companions who are as wily as they are loyal. The dialogue is packed with biting retorts, and the snapshots of everyday life in Rain City (which you see between missions and odd, vaguely legal, jobs) reminded us that the greatest ambitions can be born in unlikely places. A cocktail of humour and drama that makes each adventure as light as they are poignant!
Our tip to help you on your way? The key to success lies in optimising every part of your mecha. Between battles, remember to play the minigames to collect the resources you need for your upgrades: even the most banal tasks are worth it! In the arena, study every attack and tailor your strategy to the opponent in front of you. Variation is essential to not getting predictable, and believe us, a few well-placed blows will make all the difference.
Who will enjoy this game? This one will be popular with fans of tactical RPGs and stories with quirky characters. For ages 14+, it remains accessible while serving up a real challenge for strategists who like to refine their tactics. If you like adventures that take you off the beaten track, with a bit of humour and melancholy thrown in, this is the game for you.
