A great construction game that's similar to Bridge Constructor. Players are tasked with building all kinds of ski lifts, bridges, and ski jumps in the mountains. But watch out: the slightest construction mistake will produce some hilarious failures. The game is at its best when it all goes wrong and you send skiers flying everywhere. A funny, intelligent game.
The name says it all.
From the creators of the super-fun Human Fall Flat. The game uses many of the same concepts as Bridge Constructor, just set in the mountains. You'll need to build lifts, cable cars, and jumps for skiers and snowmobiles. Towards the end of the game, the action leaves the snowy peaks for summer in the mountains with mountain and motocross bikes.
But whatever the season, the game always uses the same physics, and the slightest construction error produces some hilarious failures. Shoddy workmanship results in your passengers crashing into obstacles or falling victim to gravity.
We loved the splashes of blood on the snow! They really stand out in the low ploy environments with their barebones aesthetic, piling pressure onto the player.
We loved the start of the game and its tutorial which shows you everything step by step.
In addition to the essential cable, your building materials include planks of wood, more durable logs, guy wires, pulleys, platforms, and scaffolding. The cost of each component can be seen in the top right corner of the screen.
After the tutorial, you're free to go your own way: laying foundations and choosing your own materials.
When Ski Lifts Go Wrong also features secondary objectives, with budget restrictions for construction work and medals to collect.
There's no need to be an engineering graduate to have fun here. Each segment of your construction project gets colour coded depending on the forces it is subjected to, from green to yellow and then red, and all in real time. There's a bar displaying the total stress on your structure, which will collapse when it reaches 100%. It's an effective system that lets you quickly correct any design flaws.
Some levels take a different tack, and see you playing as a skier or snowboarder. On these levels, building the lift is only half the job: you'll also need to get your skier across the finish line by controlling his jumps and lines. It's loads of fun with all the hilarious accidents!
Our favourite part? Sandbox mode! This is where you can create your own levels to your own specifications, from the general terrain and individual skiers to the available components and any constraints. Infinite replayability.
But the campaign is long enough in its own right, and with more than 100 levels that each take at least 10 minutes to complete, there's plenty to keep you occupied!
One thing is for sure: you'll never look at a ski lift in the same way again!
