Using this device, Frederick can enter a victim's memories and shift between objective reality and imagined perceptions. Add in alternative endings and an epilogue that might just see you rethink everything you know about the case, and this director's cut somehow manages to make the mystery even more harrowing.
The gameplay is based around point and click sequences, in which you explore and analyse every corner of a sombre world that is real one moment and symbolic the next. You'll need to dig out clues in both realities if you're to solve the murder of an influential vice-president. Here, memory gaps are the enemy... as is information overload. A cocktail of introspection, tension, and, we have to admit, a kind of intellectual torture!
We liked the utterly engrossing mental immersion. We can only applaud the game's talent for immersing you in a psychological mystery where everything is open to interpretation. Each vision in the victim's subconscious, every background noise and shifting shadow... they are all designed to throw you off balance.
Our favourite part? The way memory is manipulated. If we had to keep just one thing, it would be the amazing feeling of never quite being able to trust what you see. In the subconscious, memories are not to be trusted: they show themselves, hide, change direction, and shapeshift... it's a real mental ballet. It's not just about putting the pieces of a puzzle together, but also accepting that the puzzle can never have a definitive shape. You're constantly navigating between what you know and what you think you know. Intellectually stimulating!
Our tip to help you on your way? Do not underestimate even the slightest clue, especially in the subconscious where an apparently insignificant detail might hold the key to the whole puzzle. Our advice? Pay particularly close attention to noises and changing colours. And if it all gets too intense, you can always switch to the simplified mode so that you can keep up with the plot. It will streamline the whole experience without compromising the core of the mystery.
