A lone hero launches a bloody vendetta against the members of a criminal organisation. Inspired by the Hotline Miami series with its fast and brutal gameplay, it is set in a world inspired by John Woo's Hong Kong action movies. It's really well done, but the violence is extra gory. One for grown-ups who know what they're getting into.
Developed by Swedish studio Vreski, The Hong Kong Massacre is a top-down shooter that draws heavily on John Woo's movies for inspiration, and serves up a high octane experience for shooter fans.
Our favourite part? How it feels like you've been thrown straight into a '90s action movie. The developers have successfully captured the essence of Hong Kong crime thrillers, with neon-lit environments and a striking nocturnal ambience. Every hail of bullets against the Triads and every movement in bullet-time instantly reminds you of iconic scenes in John Woo's movies, where each and every bullet and movement are choreographed to form a deadly ballet.
We liked how your character responds to the controls. Their movements are as fluid as they come and the bullet time, in particular, brings an even more spectacular dimension to the gameplay, allowing you to slow time to take out assassins with surgical precision.
When it comes to the gameplay, anyone who's played Hotline Miami will feel right at home, even if The Hong Kong Massacre opts for more realistic graphics. The game alternates between sequences that demand precision gameplay, where your every movement must be carefully planned, and explosive action sequences where everything kicks off in just a few seconds. These different sequences keep the tension ratcheted right up, and make all of your victories all the more rewarding.
Our advice to help you on your way?
To master The Hong Kong Massacre, it is vital that you strike the right balance between movement and strategy.
The Hong Kong Massacre doesn't waste any time. The levels are short, and you'll generally complete them in two minutes once you learn how to pull it off. That said, you'll be restarting the level plenty of times before you find the right strategy. This isn't a game for the faint of heart, but it's fantastic for anyone who likes brutal, stylised action. One for real fans of hardcore shooters and Hong Kong action movies.
