A gory FPS inspired by Doom, where you do battle with hordes of enemies in an apocalyptic future that combines a manga and H.R. Giger (the man behind the design of Alien) aesthetic. Expect fierce combat, plenty of blood, and omnipresent violence. The recoil on the weapons makes it a brutally immersive game. The gore can be turned off for a slightly gentler experience. One for grown-ups.
First things first: The Citadel isn't all sunshine and rainbows. If you're a fan of Doom and action-packed gaming, this game puts you in the shoes of a lone soldier in an apocalyptic future in the midst of a war against hordes of grotesque creatures. Inspired by the manga aesthetic and the dark visions of H.R. Giger (the creator of the monster in Alien), The Citadel immerses you in a deluge of violence and pure adrenaline.
The gameplay is simple and straight to the point: you run, your shoot, you dodge enemy attacks, and you keep your eyes peeled for ambushes. Like in any good Doom-like, your weapons are your best friend and you'll need to juggle both your resources and their effectiveness if you're to survive each wave of enemies. But don't be fooled: this apparent simplicity belies an unforgivingly challenging game. It's vital that you keep an eye on your ammo, and every second counts.
There's no denying that The Citadel is a rough diamond, but a diamond it is, nevertheless. You can really feel the care that its single developer put into the game, and the result is genuinely impressive.
We liked the fluid combat. The weapons are powerful, and movement is swift and responsive. It's nothing too complicated, but precision really counts. The game is easy to pick up and play, but be warned: as you advance further through the game, you'll be faced with tougher and more numerous enemies. We particularly liked the level design: the environments are open enough for you to come up with cunning approaches and avoid dangerous situations, yet small enough so that an enemy is never far away.
Our favourite part? The atmosphere. The Citadel immerses you in a dark and oppressive atmosphere, with detailed environments. You can't help but be fascinated by the creatures you are tasked with taking out. It's a bit like an interactive horror film where you're always walking on a razor's edge. And while violence might be omnipresent, the game's unique aesthetic means that you're immersed in a world the likes of which you've never seen before.
Our tip to help you on your way? Don't just rush headlong into battle! The greatest pitfall would be to think you're invincible. The Citadel rewards players who take the time to observe the environment and plan their approach. Take a few seconds to analyse the terrain, earmark ammo caches, and prepare to attack. And if you can't stand gore? Never fear: the game has an option to turn off the blood, perfect for gamers who want to focus on the action without the intense visual effects.
Who will enjoy this game? Fans of FPS, and anyone who grew up with games like Doom will be able to scratch that itch here. Just remember: this isn't a game for the faint of heart! It's a hard game, with demanding resource management that leaves no room for improvisation. If you're used to a challenge and you like graphic violence, then get stuck in! Younger gamers and anyone looking for a more relaxed experience will be better served elsewhere.
