The Bookwalker is a narrative adventure in which you play as Etienne Quist, a writer-turned-thief with the ability to dive into books. Use your powers to journey between reality and book worlds, and steal legendary items like Thor's Hammer and Excalibur to restore your ability to write.
What if a disgraced writer could literally slip into the pages of any novel and steal its most legendary artefacts? That is the dizzying premise of The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales, an original and spellbinding narrative point & click adventure developed by DO MY BEST.
You play as Étienne Quist, a once-celebrated novelist, now convicted and stripped of his ability to write. To pay off his debts and try to reclaim his gift, he agrees to use his peculiar talent in the service of unscrupulous clients: travelling inside books to extract legendary artefacts. Thor's hammer from a Norse saga, Excalibur from an Arthurian epic, a forbidden grimoire from a sorcery novel... Each mission drops you into a different literary universe with its own rules, dangers and characters to manipulate.
We loved: The duality between the two gameplay worlds. In the real world everything is sober, dark and oppressive: your dingy apartment, creditors hammering at the door, your parole ticking down. Inside the books everything opens up: graphically rich, colourful, fantastical environments. This constant alternation between the greyness of reality and the magic of fiction creates a perfectly controlled narrative rhythm.
We liked: The limited resource system that forces you to plan every literary incursion. Étienne has a finite amount of spectral energy for staying inside a book. Every action costs resources. You must improvise, prioritise, sometimes sacrifice one lead to follow another. This understated management system adds welcome strategic tension to an experience that is first and foremost a narrative one.
Our highlight: The richness of the literary worlds visited and the quality of their writing. Each book is a new adventure with its own atmosphere, its own endearing supporting characters and its own rules. You genuinely feel as though you are reading — and stealing from — a novel, and the developers' love of literature shines through on every turned page.
Our tip to help you: Before every dive into a book, take full stock of your resources and read the mission briefing carefully. Some artefacts can only be retrieved after performing specific actions in the exact right order — backtracking is not always possible and your energy drains quickly. Talk to every side character: they often hold essential clues for progressing without wasting energy.
