Some games belong to a whole generation's childhood. Spyro the Dragon is one of them. Developed by Toys for Bob and published by Activision, the Reignited Trilogy collects the first three saga episodes, Spyro the Dragon (1998), Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999) and Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000), in fully remastered versions that surpass the originals in beauty while preserving their soul.
The result is stunning: the colourful worlds millions of players explored in childhood emerge here in all their splendour, powered by a modern graphics engine, careful lighting and reinvented animations for every character. And the gameplay, flying, breathing fire, charging enemies, remains as immediately satisfying as in 1998.
We loved: The quality of the remaster. Toys for Bob rebuilt everything polygon by polygon with near-obsessive care. Every world, NPC and boss was completely redrawn in high definition with total respect for the original.
We liked: The richness of content. Three complete games in one compilation, with collectibles, secrets, bosses and bonus levels from every episode. Over 20 hours of play for completionists.
Our highlight: The soundtrack revisited by Stewart Copeland. The original trilogy's composer returned for the Reignited Trilogy, and it shows: music is a fundamental part of Spyro's identity, and it is fully honoured here.
Our tip to help you: Do not neglect the gems. Collecting all gems in each level is not mandatory, but it is the best way to discover every corner of Spyro's worlds. Some gems require returning with new abilities, like a light Metroidvania.
