Shadow of the Orient

Publisher: Spacelab Games

Shadow of the Orient is a 2d pixel art action platformer where you play as a young warrior named Xiaolang who must venture across the orient fighting hordes of Samurai warriors and mythical creatures in an attempt to rescue the kidnapped children of the orient and face off against the dark lord.

The village children have disappeared. Supernatural forces struck in the night. And Xiaolang may be the only one who can save them. Developed by Canadian studio Spacelab Games and published by Spanish studio Dolores Entertainment, Shadow of the Orient is a 2D pixel art action platformer paying homage to the great genre classics: from Ninja Gaiden to the oriental beat'em-ups of the 80s and 90s.

The game relies on fast platform gameplay, carefully crafted pixel art animations and a level-based progression that intelligently diversifies environments and game sequences. Xiaolang jumps, climbs, attacks and triggers special abilities across settings inspired by fantastical Asia: snow-covered temples, mystical forests, cursed palaces.

We loved: The pixel art direction. Shadow of the Orient is visually generous: every zone has its own identity, colours and enemies. The attention paid to Xiaolang's animations gives him remarkable screen presence.

We liked: The variety of game sequences. Shadow of the Orient avoids monotony by alternating level types and challenges: precise platforms, intense combat, stealth passages. The game never settles too long in one mode.

Our highlight: The generous checkpoint system. Shadow of the Orient is a demanding game but never punishing. Frequent checkpoints allow you to progress without frustration and appreciate the level design in full.

Our tip to help you: Learn boss attack patterns before launching offensive strategies. Shadow of the Orient rewards observation and patience. A well-studied boss falls far more easily than one attacked blindly.

Who is this game for? Shadow of the Orient is aimed at players aged 12 and over, particularly fans of 2D action platformers in the retro classic tradition, pixel art enthusiasts and those passionate about fantastical oriental themes. An excellent choice for fans nostalgic for Ninja Gaiden or Shinobi.
