The sun sets over a deserted American highway, the radio blasts rock and you are driving fast — very fast — to escape something you cannot yet name. Heading Out is a unique narrative roguelike road trip, developed by Serious Sim, that blends the beauty of the great American open road, the tension of a chase and the depth of a story in which you are the flawed hero.
You play as a fugitive at the wheel, crossing the United States from east to west along procedurally generated routes. Every run is different: the events that unfold on the road, encounters with the police, moral decisions to make, flashbacks that gradually reveal your past... Everything changes with each new game. But one thing stays constant: the road, the engine and your fears catching up with you.
We loved: The fusion of visual novel, driving game and roguelike. These three genres might have seemed incompatible, but Serious Sim weaves them together with remarkable intelligence. The driving sequences (a stylised front-facing view in a noir film aesthetic) create perfect atmospheric tension, the narrative choices have real consequences on the rest of the run, and the roguelike structure gives every game a feeling of freshness and unpredictability.
We liked: The stylised black-and-white art direction, heavily inspired by American cinema of the 1970s. Panoramas of deserts, mountains and highways scroll past like frames from a Terrence Malick film. The rock and country soundtrack fits the "American fugitive" atmosphere perfectly. This is a sensory experience as much as a narrative one.
Our highlight: The character-building system at the start of each run. Before every attempt, you answer a series of questions that define your character's backstory: why are you running? Who is chasing you? What are your strengths and weaknesses? This narrative creation mechanic generates a slightly different context each time, making every run feel personal and emotionally engaging from the first minute.
Our tip to help you: Manage your resources (fuel, money, fatigue) with the same care as your narrative choices. A poor management decision can end your run long before you reach the West Coast. On the road, do not always flee from the police: sometimes stopping and negotiating is more cost-effective than a chase that drains your tank. And beware of back roads at night: they are risky but can conceal valuable opportunities.
