Far Cry 2
Publisher: Ubisoft
You are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to make this country your home. You must identify and exploit your enemies' weaknesses, neutralizing their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and of course brute force.
In Far Cry 2, you arrive in an African country torn apart by civil war. Factions fight for territory, weapons circulate and an arms dealer known as the Jackal fuels the conflict from the shadows. Your mission is to find him, but the road is filled with temporary alliances, dangerous missions and free exploration in a world built for immersion.
Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Far Cry 2 takes a more systemic approach than its successors. Weapons wear down, travel requires preparation, outposts are rebuilt and enemies react to noise and position. The result is an FPS where observation and preparation matter as much as aim.
We loved: The sense of presence in the world. Savannah, dusty roads, brush fires and changing weather give every journey a distinct personality.
We liked: The freedom of approach. You choose your weapons, routes and the way you attack camps. A mission can become a stealth operation, a frontal assault or an improvised chase through the bush.
Our highlight: The reputation and ally system. Relationships with other mercenaries influence your progress and give the campaign a more personal dimension.
Our tip to help you: Observe enemy positions from vegetation before attacking. Use binoculars to mark threats, identify alarms and choose a retreat route. Maintain your weapons regularly, since a poorly maintained weapon can jam at the most important moment.
Who is this game for?
Far Cry 2 is aimed at players aged 18 and over who enjoy open-world FPS games, realistic environments and systems that reward preparation. Players who prefer tactical shooting experiences with less linearity will find a particularly immersive adventure.
Press scores: Metacritic 85/100 (PC) | 84/100 (Xbox 360)
