Run, glide, and use magic and stealth in a Lovecraftian world. The latest game from the creator of Lara Croft immerses you in a surreal adventure with a female protagonist. You play as an apprentice arcanist trapped in a parallel dimension. The gameplay is great with its solid combat, and just climbing its lofty tower in a flaming cavern is a dreamlike experience. We loved it.
Morgan Carter, an apprentice arcanist, finds herself stripped of her essence by a mysterious ancestor and trapped in a twisted dimension, inspired by Lovecraft's tales. To escape this corrupted world and regain her power, Morgan must do battle with shadowy creatures and thwart the plans of her estranged parent that threaten the real world.
Dream Cycle, created by Toby Gard, the man who brought us Lara Croft, is a first person action-adventure game. In this game, you have a whole array of strategies available to help you progress through this sandbox inspired by the occult: stealth, traps, spells and illusions can all come in useful in getting past enemies, but you might also opt for traditional weapons in a more direct assault.
With its open world and strategic gameplay, Dream Cycle serves up an immersive experience where the gameplay is tailored to your own approach. Whether you're upgrading your heroine or choosing between stealth and frontal assaults, the game promises and adventure bursting with possibilities.
We loved the fluid movements and the multi-level environments that deliver an original gameplay experience. You can run, glide, and use spells to make your way through levels filled with puzzles and secrets. The combat is dynamic, switching between magic and stealth.
We liked the game's captivating environments, inspired by the world of dreams and nightmares. What's more, the sensation of vertical scale – in particular when climbing the giant tower in a flaming cavern – is a real highlight that makes exploration all the more exciting.
Our favourite part? Without a doubt the character of Morgan Carter herself. Her charming personality, expressed through an Irish accent dripping in sarcasm, makes the whole experience more engrossing. The dialogue adds a touch of humour and balances out the moments of tension and action, and you'll soon become attached to this fascinating character.
Our tip to help you on your way? In the Cavern of Flames level, you'll encounter tough enemies patrolling around the huge central tower. If you're to make progress, begin by using stealth to avoid direct confrontation. Take the time to observe your enemies' movement patterns and wait until they are facing away from you before slipping past behind their backs. You can also use illusions to create a diversion. Cast an illusion in the opposite direction to draw their attention away from your path. This way, you'll reach the top of the tower without raising any suspicions, picking up some vital resources for your next adventure.
Who will enjoy this game?
Dream Cycle is aimed mainly at gamers aged 12+ who are looking for an immersive experience with plenty of exploration. The game features a fair learning curve, but some sequences might demand a bit of patience and planning.
