Crash Bandicoot has not aged. He has been remastered. The difference matters. The N. Sane Trilogy, developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Activision, is not a simple visual update: it is a careful reconstruction of the franchise's first three games, with fully rebuilt visuals, re-recorded soundtrack and gameplay faithful to the originals, with some welcome improvements.
The compilation brings together Crash Bandicoot (1996), Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (1997) and Crash Bandicoot: Warped (1998): three PS1 platform classics that defined a generation of players. Every game benefits from the same high-definition visual treatment, while preserving the demanding challenge and charm that built their reputation.
We loved: The faithfulness to the originals. Vicarious Visions kept what gave the original games their soul: the levels, enemies, crates to smash, progressive difficulty. Nothing was watered down or oversimplified.
We liked: The progression across three episodes. The three games differ in approach: the first is brutal and precise, the second introduces warp levels and memorable bosses, the third radically diversifies gameplay with motorbike levels, tiger-riding and time travel. Three games, three flavours, one Crash.
Our highlight: The art direction. The N. Sane Trilogy is gorgeous. Tropical settings, Crash's animations, cinematics between levels: everything was rethought with care and affection for the source material.
Our tip to help you: Master the timing of the spin attack. In all three games, a well-executed spin is the difference between flowing through levels and returning to a crate. Bonus crates and hidden gems are earned, not given.
