Chess Knights: Viking Lands
Publisher: Minimol Games
Like chess, but better! Once you’ve mastered the nuances of the knight’s movement on the chess board, you’ll have to use your knights to rescue other pieces trapped on each level, and bring them back to the safe zone before your enemies catch you.
Chess Knights: Viking Lands takes the chess-inspired puzzle formula into a Viking setting. You control a knight whose L-shaped movement carries you through levels, rescues pieces and completes each map's objective.
This is not a full game of chess. Instead, it asks you to understand how the knight's movement interacts with obstacles, enemies and pieces that need rescuing. The levels are arranged around northern regions and gradually introduce situations that require several moves of planning.
We loved: The change of atmosphere. The movement rule feels familiar, while the Viking setting gives the maps a distinct personality.
We liked: The rescue objective. Every freed piece becomes part of the solution and makes the order of moves matter.
Our favorite part: The bonus maps. They extend the adventure with routes that require a stronger understanding of the knight's options.
Our tip to help you: Count moves before entering a narrow area. Always check the next landing square and keep a possible return route. When rescuing several pieces, look for the order that opens the most squares rather than the closest rescue.
