"Backstab, RNG, Skill".. and you, do you speak video games?

No need to go far to be immersed in the vocabulary of gamers. You go to any forum, and for the majority of us, the need for a lexicon or even a dictionary becomes evident very quickly.
So, as an example, I did simple copy-pastes on a forum chosen at random. The dialogue is about a new Fortnite-like game that has just been tested :

• 'Finally a Battle Royale game where the skill matters and where it isn’t enough to have your butt parked behind a tree with a big sniper rifle to hope to win.'
• 'I really don’t understand the review score, or more precisely I don’t understand why so many people complain about the Backstab, the RNG, or the fact that the characters are unbalanced...'
• '3 min of matchmaking / 50 sec of gameplay / the pure skill that was the basis of battlerite is fading a little with an item system, potions... and with the main default of the BR: the one who loots the most wins, which means I don’t feel Battlerite’s joy in this Royal!'

Translation (the text is much longer!)

• 'Finally a Battle Royale game where talent matters and where it isn’t enough to have your butt behind a tree with a big sniper rifle to win.'
• 'I really don’t understand the review score or rather why so many people complain about the backstabs in the back (backstabbing), the game’s too random in nature, or the fact that some playable characters are stronger than others.'
• '3 minutes to find a match and 50 seconds of gameplay (these three minutes are the time you need to fetch other players when playing online)... the pure talent that was the base of battlerite (the game's name) fades a bit with an item or potion loot system... and with the main flaw of Fortnite-style games: the one who has collected the most items wins, which means I don’t find Battlerite’s joy in this Battle Royale-type game!'

The verdict is quick: anglicisms are legion.

Yet for 2 years, the vocabulary of video-game addicts has entered the French dictionary. The powerful General Terminology and Neology Commission of the Académie Française has studied some of these anglicisms to find a French equivalent.

• Alternate reality game (ARG) => game with integrated reality (JRI) — note to avoid confusion with JRI (Journaliste Reporter d’Image).

• Binge viewing or binge watching => binge viewing

• Casual game => mass-market game (simple games that don’t require too much time)

• Casual gamer => casual player, -er (note they often play daily!)

• First person shooter (FPS) => shooter game in a first-person view (JTS)

• Hardcore gamer => hardcore gamer, -er

• Hardcore gaming => intensive play of video games

• Massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) => massively multiplayer online game (MMOG)

• Massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) => massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG)

• Third person shooter (TPS) = shooter game in a third-person view (JTO)
